Consumer Reports has published a list of "Five Ways to Save When Installing a New Floor," some of which may not go over well with wood flooring professionals. They recommend to consumers that they buy from flooring discounters, save by buying damaged goods, add only 10 percent to a room's square footage so they don't "overbuy," ask for samples instead of relying on catalogs, and do prep work such as floor removal, subfloor "leveling" and baseboard removal themselves.
