After
folding in June, the Golden State Flooring name is back in business.
Earlier this month, investor Simon Shushan purchased certain assets of the former wood flooring company from its previous owner, J.E. Higgins Lumber Company. Next, along with former Higgins employees Allen Smith and Jason Grant, Shushan launched Golden State Flooring Inc. and re-launched www.goldenstateflooring.com.
To start, Golden State Flooring Inc. will operate two branches, one in San Diego (open today) and another in San Jose (opening July 23). In the future, the company hopes to service Nevada and Arizona, as well.
Smith formerly served as the former Golden State Flooring's vice president of sales, and with the new company he will serve as president. Grant, who held various sales and marketing roles at Higgins over a 22-year career (and is not to be confused with forest products consultant Jason Grant), will serve as vice president of the new company. Shushan will not have a day-to-day role in the new venture. The team is currently hiring to round out its staff, and eventually the company will comprise a combination of former Golden State Flooring employees and new hires.
Currently, Golden State Flooring Inc. offers its house brands of wood flooring-the prefinished Portofino and unfinished Allen & Tuggle lines-as well as sundries, adhesives and abrasives. Additional product lines will be announced in the coming months, according to Grant.
The company was first started in the 1920s by Clifford Coates with a store in San Francisco. In 1929, the company was purchased by Higgins and from then on operated as a separated division. In its marketing materials, the new company references this history with the tagline, "A name you've trusted since 1929."
"With the right people, the right product, exceptional service, and lots of hard work, we will have success," said Shushan, who is also the owner of S&S Hardwood Floor Supply of Gardena, Calif.
