Vermont Natural Coatings (Hardwick, Vt.) was recently cited as an example of innovation in a CNN Money article ranking the "10 most inventive states."
Vermont ranked No. 1 on the list, due to its "robust life sciences, burgeoning food manufacturing and microbrewing industries." Patent development in the state is driven by research institutions like the University of Vermont, which developed the wood coatings based on whey protein, a dairy byproduct and renewable resource, from which Vermont Natural Coatings makes its floor and furniture finishes.
