On April 13, volunteers gathered to help finish a new home built by Homes for our Troops (HFOT), which builds new, specially designed homes for veterans at no cost, for Marine Corporal Tony Mullis in Hawkinsville, Ga.
As the exclusive flooring provider for HFOT, Armstrong Flooring Products donated engineered wood flooring to the project. Armstrong distributor William M. Bird (Charleston, S.C.) donated 50 percent of the cost of the floor.
Mullis was injured in Southern Afghanistan on April 6, 2011, a day after his first child was born. He lost both legs from an IED. He was evacuated, and days later arrived at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he was met by his wife and newborn son and began his long road to recovery. To date, Mullis has received seven blood transfusions and more than fifteen surgeries.
At this time, Mullis is still receiving treatment and physical therapy at Walter Reed.
