The Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources plans to use drones to track illegal logging on the southern island of Mindanao, however, members of a militant group believe the drones will be used to spy on communist rebels, according to Inquirer News.
Joselin Marius Fragada, DENR regional director, told Inquirer that the drones, which are available for rent by the hour, would provide more accurate and reliable data than people can.
Sheena Duazo, secretary general of the leftist New Patriotic Alliance, suspects the drones will be used to target the communist New People's Army rather than illegal loggers.
"Illegal logging has long been there," Duazo told Inquirer. "Between illegal logging and combating the insurgents, I think they're keen on the latter, because even local officials are involved in illegal logging."
