Single-family housing starts were at 649,000, or 0.8 percent above the revised March figure of 644,000, and the rate for buildings with five or more units in April was 413,000.
Permits also saw a sharp increase in April. Privately-owned housing units were authorized at a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 1,080,000, or 8 percent higher than the March rate of 1 million. Single-family authorizations in April were only marginally higher-0.3 percent-than the March rate of 602,000.
