The pair would hack enormous burls off of old-growth redwoods and sell them to local dealers. The other poacher pleaded guilty in May to felony charges in vandalizing the trees and is in jail on other charges.

When the burls were not reachable from the ground, Garcia and his accomplice, Larry Morrow, would fell entire trees.

The burls were enormous, with the largest cut measuring 8.3 feet at the base, 8.2 feet in height and 1.7 feet deep.
