About 300 million cubic meters of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council is harvested each year around the globe, according to recently published FSC study, available for download online.
The FSC’s reported harvest volume, which converts to 105.9 billion cubic feet, is equal to 16.6 percent of the global industrial roundwood market and 8 percent of the global fuelwood and industrial roundwood market, the organization wrote on its website.
“This is the first time that we are able to estimate the quantity of wood which leaves forests as FSC-certified,” said Marcelle Peuckert, business development director at FSC International, in a statement. “The results are remarkable and give a good idea of FSC’s presence in the supply chain, and in the market.”
The harvest volume was estimated based on 1,250 FSC forest management audit reports that cover forests with a total area of about 183 million hectares.
