In 2014 the Earth lost 18 million hectares of forest, enough to fill up all of North Dakota, according to a new study from the University of Maryland and Google.
Tropical forests lost 9.9 million hectares of tree cover in 2014.
The countries with the fastest rate of growth of tree cover loss were: Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, Uruguay, Paraguay, Liberia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The main drivers behind deforestation in 2014 were an increasing demand for rubber and palm oil, and soy farm expansion and cattle farming.
