About 8,000 square feet of space inside the first complete cross-laminated timber building in New York State is for reclaimed and sustainable wood products company Pioneer Millworks (Farmington, N.Y.), according to the Finger Lake Times.
The walls and roof of the 21,000-square-foot building were built with CLT technology, an engineered wood building system with high strength and dimensional stability that can be used as an alternative to concrete and steel.
The majority of the space is home to NEWwoodworks, the fine-woodworking division of New Energy Works Timberframes, which was founded by Pioneer Millworks President Jonathan Orpin.
“CLTs are redefining what we think the concept of the high-rise is,” Orpin told the Finger Lake Times. “It’s a low-carbon footprint, high-quality way to build; it goes up faster than concrete and steel; and engineering suggests it’s just as strong. We see CLTs as the wave of the future and are investing in our Western New York campus to better position the region and our industry to ride the wave.”
