Castlewood (Tell City, Ind.), a high-end wood flooring manufacturer behind award-winning floors installed by Miami-based Natural Wood Floors and Design, lost a bid with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry to preserve an old-growth forest.
The bid was won by a commercial logging firm, despite the firm’s bid being $42,000 less than Castlewood’s.
“It really makes no sense,” said Daniel Antes, owner of Distinctive Hardwood Flooring, speaking as a representative of Castlewood in an email.
Castlewood wanted to purchase the forest to manage it sustainably, which Castlewood Principal Bobby Bartlett believes won’t happen as successfully under management by the commercial logging firm that won the bid.
