Indianapolis Contractor Launches Floor Covering Apprenticeship

Indianapolis floor covering contractor The Jack Laurie Group has launched a floor covering apprenticeship program, the first program developed by a private employer to be certified by the Labor Department.

The non-union apprenticeship, offered through a partnership with Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., aims to increase the talent base of floor covering installers to help the workforce shortage.

Apprentices work through a four-year curriculum and, upon completion, graduate as a trade journeyman. Participants are paid for on-the-job training, a minimum rate of pay is guaranteed, and they can also choose to acquire an associate’s degree from Vincennes University for free.

“This is a huge opportunity for the entire construction industry and the men and women who strive to make it their profession, and we are optimistic about the impact the program will have on the local economy,” said Tom Postell, vice president of operations and chief architect of the program, in a statement. “I feel responsible for finding, developing and supporting the next generation of construction tradespeople here at Jack Laurie Group and in our communities. Ultimately, the success of our company depends upon it.”
