“Home improvement/construction” received the worst consumer complaints of any service in 2017, according to the Consumer Federation of America’s annual Consumer Complaint Survey Report.
The distinction was determined based on the number of complaints made to local or state agencies across the country, the dollar amount involved in the complaints, the impact on vulnerable consumers, and “the sheer outrageousness of the situation” complained about, according to the report.
Behind “home improvement/construction” on the list were “landlord/tenant” and “fraud.”
The “construction/home improvement” category also ranked second among the top 10 most complained about services in 2017. The top complaint was for “auto” services.
“These transactions often involve significant amounts of money, but the financial loss is not the only issue,” the report stated. “Home improvement and construction problems can also cause tremendous hardships for consumers, even homelessness.”
