A fire believed to have been ignited from oil-stained rags engulfs a Campbell River home. Source: Campbell River Fire Twitter.
The Campbell River Fire Department received a call about the flames at 12:33 p.m. Aug. 19 and was able to keep the fire from spreading to the adjacent home.
Two people were in the house at the time the rags spontaneously combusted but were able to escape uninjured. A kitten died in the fire.
The oil-stained rags had been stored in the home’s garage along with mineral oil rags, according to the report. Mineral oils, such as white spirit, mineral turpentine or lubricating oil, are not prone to self-heating and will not cause spontaneous ignition, according to the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service.
