Russia’s proposed halt to logging exports in 2022 could have major impacts on the global forest industry, according to a new study by Wood Resources International.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposed law would ban the export of softwood logs and high-value hardwood logs beginning Jan. 1, 2022.
The ban would likely cause a large shift in sawlog sourcing for China, which may turn to regions such as Oceania, Europe and the U.S. for logging.
“The increased competition for logs in those markets will likely put upward pressure on sawlog prices,” according to the study.
Russia exported almost 12% of globally traded roundwood in 2020.
