Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest set a September record as fires raged to levels not seen in more than 10 years, Reuters reported.
Around 562 square miles of rainforest were destroyed, a 48% increase compared with September 2021, beating out the September 2019 record for deforestation in the area.
From January to September, deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest surged 22.6% compared with the same period in 2021, wiping out an area 11 times the size of New York City, according to Reuters.
