Report: Superyachts Industry a ‘Key Player’ in Illegal Teak Trade

Many superyachts are harboring more than just a luxurious boating experience—they’re also frequently outfitted with illegally sourced teak, according to an investigation by the Dutch publication NRC and a series of reports by Superyacht News.

The tropical hardwood is sourced for its durability and used in superyachts due to its “aesthetic appeal and resistance to the harsh marine environment,” according to Superyacht News.

Superyacht News also referenced an Environmental Investigation Agency report that found up to 40% of teak imports from Myanmar are used for luxury yachts. That demand has allowed the illegal teak trade to thrive in Myanmar, made easier by corruption and weak government oversight, the reports note.
