Construction employment increased in 42 states and D.C. between May 2022 and May 2023, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.
Year-over-year, construction employment declined in seven states and remained unchanged in Vermont. Texas recorded the most construction jobs added year-over-year with 21,100 jobs, followed by New York (12,900) and Ohio (8,400).
Month-over-month in May, construction employment grew in 24 states, declined in 22 states and remained flat in four states and D.C.
“Contractors remain busy nationwide, with bulging order books for future work,” stated AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. “But they are having trouble filling job openings when the industry unemployment rate is only 3.5 percent. That probably accounts for the recent lack of job gains in many states.”
