The construction industry had 236,000 job openings on the last day of January, a 31,000 increase from the previous month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.
On a year-over-year basis, construction job openings were down 42.0%, representing 171,000 fewer jobs.
“While construction job openings remained subdued in January, industrywide labor force churn increased meaningfully,” Associated Builders and Contractors Chief Economist Anirban Basu said in a statement. “Both hires and separations—including layoffs, discharges and quits—accelerated to the fastest rate since the first half of 2024.”
