Costa Rica is creating a National Forest Traceability System tool to guarantee the legal and sustainable use of timber, the Tico Times reported.
The tool aims to make exports compliant with the European Union Deforestation Regulation and the United States’ Lacey Act.
This process is part of a national strategy to strengthen forest legality and reduce illegal timber trade, according to the Tico Times.
Costa Rica exports more than $370 million worth of wood products every year, according to data from the World Integrated Trade Solution. Over 75% of its timber trade goes to its Central American neighbors.
