The European Commission has proposed delaying the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation for the second year in a row, Reuters reported.
The regulation was initially scheduled to take effect on Dec. 30, 2024, but the Commission proposed delaying it until the end of this year. Now the Commission has proposed delaying it until the end of 2026.
The EUDR will impose stringent regulatory mandates on the import and export of wood products within the EU jurisdiction to ensure products are legally sourced and deforestation-free.
Concerns about the readiness of information-technology systems needed to support the law caused the postponement of the EUDR, Reuters reported.
