Residential construction lost 10,400 jobs in April, a 0.03% decline, including a decrease of 1,500 in residential building and 8,900 in residential specialty trade contractors, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-over-year, residential construction lost 49,200 jobs, a 1.5% decrease.
Despite the loss in the residential sector, the overall construction industry added 9,000 jobs from March to April due to nonresidential construction employment increasing by 19,000 positions.
The construction unemployment rate was 3.8% in April, a decrease of 2.9 percentage points from March.
