On25 Talking Sh Process For Al Ox

We asked our followers on the WFB Facebook and Instagram pages what their techniques are for dealing with aluminum oxide. Here are some of their responses:

Diamonds on the Lägler Trio/Flip, then 40-grit zirconia paper to clean the scratch and proceed through the papers from there. Scrape the corners.

36 at an angle.

Here’s the start [see photo], then clean it up with the big machine and back to the Power Drive for finishing. Scraping is your hardest step.

If it’s a V-bevel hand-scraped hickory, I’ll go buy the Hummel milling drum and use a planer on the perimeter.  But anything other than that, I’d use the diamond attachment for the planetary then switch to Norton Blaze X or Bona Blue.

One quick cut with worn 80-grit just breaking the surface until the finish turns white. Then, sand it like a normal floor.

40 Norton Blaze X on the big machine, then 50 with Regalite. 60 with regular Blaze. Do my edger work: 40 Blaze X, 60 Regalite, 100 Regalite. Either end with an 80 Blaze belt or 100 Regalite, and I do it quickly. Palm sand with 80, and buff with 80 on the HydraSand and Norton Mesh Power if it’s natural and 100 if it’s a stain. Buff twice with 100–120 if it’s like maple.

Bona green paper on my split drum.

Diamond discs on planetary sander, followed by the regular paper sequence. Carbide rasp triangle attachment on the oscillating multi-tool for corners to break the aluminum oxide.

Years ago I would hit it with 80 on the big machine then Norton Blaze or Bona Platinum, usually 36. Then I got the diamond blades for the buffer so I would do that, then the big machine, then go from there. Now I have a Power Drive with the diamond discs. They rip through it really quick. Then I hit it once with the big machine with like 50 or 60 and go back to the Power Drive.

Norton Orange Blaze 40 belts to remove the aluminum oxide. Then Norton Red 50 belt to cut out the bevel. Then 50 edge, 60 Power Drive, 80 Power Drive, 100 palm sand, 100 Power Drive.

First cut with 24-grit Blaze followed by 36-grit. Then Power Drive with 60 and 80, then buffed with 120-grit screen, then coated with Pallmann Pall-X Natureseal and three coats of Pallmann satin water-based urethane.

Diamond cutters on the multi-disc first—game over.

Joe Dawson

Lägler diamond discs.

Dylan Siddle

Norton BlueFire—a whole box of 36, goodnight. I don’t believe in that expensive paper and I don’t believe in adding another machine to the process. Then good paper for final passes.

Put our hands over our face when we leave the estimate, pray to the floor gods the night before, wake up, remember we are badasses and can do anything! Then sand the ---- out the floor and make it beautiful!!

First I pray for strength.
