He doesn't swing a mallet, run a sander or apply finish anymore, either. He usually gets to his wood flooring retail store on Lakeland's Hwy. 98 at about 9 a.m. He'll consult with his store employees for a bit, perhaps check in with a supplier for a job he has lined up in a week, and then he typically hits the road for a day's worth of residential flooring estimates. It's not that he's above the type of hard work wood flooring installers do every day, it's just that, at 65 years old, he's earned a pass from the day-to-day hard labor. Earlier this year, Hardwood Floors spent a day on the job with Williford, who is a second-generation wood flooring contractor. As the day transpired, it became clear that, for the past few decades, Williford has led a company founded on old-fashioned values like respect, service and integrity.October 2, 2012Green IssuesEntrepreneur Saves Staves For Wine Barrel FlooringAugust 2, 2012Glue-downKids Install End Grain Floor With One of Industry's BestAugust 2, 2012Green IssuesFederal Enforcement Leads to Backlash Over Lacey ActJuly 26, 2012HistoryVintage Moments: The Boone Family's BusinessTina Boone just laughs whenever she hears the question, "How early were you on the job?" The top photo shows her at age 5 along with her brothers and industry notables Joe Jr., 9, and Daniel, 7, outside a gym flooring job in Tallahassee, Fla., posed in front of Joe Sr.'s '57 Chevy. All three of them are still part of the wood flooring industry today, and their dad remains in the mix, too: The bottom photo shows him re-upping his NWFA membership during this year's Expo in Orlando, Fla., while Joe Jr. looks on. Maybe the more apt question is, "How long will you stay on the job?"May 23, 2012DesignScourge of Beetlemania Makes For Beautiful FlooringMarch 22, 2012HistoryVintage Moments: The Inaugural NWFA ExpoIn April 1986, the NWFA held its very first convention-just five months after the association formally organized in December 1985. That first convention attracted 170 attendees, and companies used only tabletop displays to show off their wares, like St. Paul-based 3M and Memphis, Tenn.-based Biwood Flooring, both pictured here. This year, the wood flooring industry is gearing up for the 2012 NWFA Wood Flooring Expo in Orlando, Fla., and even though a lot has changed since then-especially fashion trends-the Expo's aims remain the same: to network, learn and move the industry forward.
