Zen and the Big Machine

Wayne Lee

Today we started a new job-just a simple sand-and-finish job, but the crews needed to finish a job a hour away. So it was my idea to let them work on the job from last week while I started the new job. Well it all went great. In fact, the time spent alone with the big sander was very enjoyable. The hum of the motor mixed with the sweet sound of the vacuum became peaceful.  How many times do you find peace in the sounds of the sanders? My mind was on the task at hand, while at the same time I was thinking of what it will take to get the next few weeks lined up. I am thankful we have a few weeks of work in the bank, so to speak. Yes, we're always looking for more, but the whole day was restful. It is so odd that work can be a huge stress one week and the next a comfort and joy ... today I was given the time in life to sand floors; life is good.

My big concern for work is that the mid-term battles in Washington will slow down the work we do have now.   hope that we can get past the same old junk and start getting jobs for all of us. Sure hope the rest of this week goes like it went today...peace and production can go hand in hand.
