The Race to the Bottom? Count Me Out

Wayne Lee Headshot

So...getting back into the class was not hard at all. I felt like it was yesterday that my last class was done; it was fun to show folks how to run the units and explain the sanders. The only strange part was I could not say "we;" I had to say "Clarke this" and "Clarke that." Some things have changed and some things have not, but overall, sanding floors is sanding floors.

I got a text from Joey and we got the job from a builder that wanted us to drop our price...why do they do that? They beat you up and then after all that battle say "OK, do the work." Standing tall helped with this job, but what a battle. Who is going to be the first to the bottom is all I can think of. Why do folks want to drop the price and undercut the next guy that bad? If the race is to the bottom, then I do not want to be in that race. Price does matter but I feel that the workmanship is most important.

I've been thinking of making a nice flyer and getting that out and seeing what comes of it. I am just wondering how other folks get leads other than word of mouth. I spoke to my good friend Allen in Kentucky, and he said they have the same trouble right now with guys dropping the price just to get work, so thank goodness it is not just me. Thanks for taking the time, Allen, to share your insight and battles. Once more the NWFA network is outstanding ... good friends and great members of the NWFA.
