Construction employment increased in 256 out of 385—or 71%—of metro areas year-over-year in August, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.
Construction employment declined in 65 metro areas (18%) during that time period, and construction employment remained steady in 37 metro areas (10%).
“While construction activity has rebounded from pandemic lows in many metros, the recovery is fragile,” stated Ken Simonson, AGC chief economist. “Extreme production and delivery delays, along with continuing high materials costs, may lead to project cancellations and postponements that cut into job gains.”
New York City shed the most construction jobs over the past 12 months, losing 8,600 jobs, a 6% decline. The biggest construction employment increases came in San Diego-Carlsbad, Calif., which added 8,900 jobs, an 11% increase.
