A free iPhone app, Leafsnap, now enables users to identify a tree simply by taking a photo of a leaf. The app uses visual recognition software to identify the species. Leafsnap is the first in a series of electronic field guides being developed by researchers from Columbia University, the University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institution. Currently it identifies trees in New York City and Washington, D.C., but soon will include tree of the entire continental U.S. The app is available in the App Store; iPad and Android versions will be available soon.
