Indonesia's Forest Ministry plans to dispatch 5,000 Muslim preachers to campaign against forest destruction in light of "the rampant case of illegal logging involving local communities," according to the Jakarta Post.
"Our forests don't go up in flames on their own, but are intentionally burned because there is this tradition of burning the land after harvest and before planting, which has now also affected forest areas," Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan told the newspaper.
For $234 a month, in addition to combating illegal logging, the preachers are being asked to promote forest preservation and reforestation. The program will begin later this year and last throughout 2012.
