The National Labor Relations Board has issued a final rule requiring private-sector employers to post 11x17-inch signs notifying employees of their right to collectively bargain.
The rule is scheduled to take effect Nov. 14, according to the NLRB website. The notice states that employees have the right to act together to improve wages and working conditions, to form, join and assist a union, to bargain collectively with their employer and to refrain from any of these activities.
The new rule affects the "great majority of the nearly 6 million small businesses" in the U.S., according the NLRB. The NLRB is distributing the notice from its headquarters and regional offices at no charge beginning Nov. 1. The notice will also be available for download.
In addition to the physical posting of the notice, the rule requires employers to post the notice on an Internet or intranet site if personnel rules and policies are customarily posted there. However, employers are not required to distribute the posting by e-mail, Twitter or other electronic means.
