The Hartford Courant recently published a consumer-protection story that would make any reputable wood flooring flooring contractor cry … since, unfortunately, it is all too commonplace. The story, written by Kevin Hunt, involves a homeowner and two flooring business operators who may or may not be related but are definitely dishonest.
Homeowner Lori Packer paid someone with New Britain, Conn.-based American Hardwood Floors more than $1,000 up front to refinish four rooms in her Manchester, Conn., home in July, the Courant reported. The job was bungled on not one but two occasions, Packer later learned that her contractor was unlicensed, and it took a call to the Courant's investigative team to unravel the whole convoluted story.
The work performed in Packer's home had all the trappings of an amateur. The contractor was apparently no match for the big machine, leaving the floors in Packer's home a wavy, uneven mess. The contractor also left behind finish drips on tile and marble.
Today, Packer is soliciting more bids to fix the damage caused, but her search thus far has not been fruitful: Two contractors from who she asked bids were later found to be unlicensed, as well.
