The American Hardwood Export Council recently recognized design firm AHK International with a Commercial Interior Design Award for its use of American hardwoods in a construction project in the Middle East.
AHK showcased American walnut throughout the library-including its floors-at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Included in AHK's $4 million contract was construction and implementation of wood floors, fixed joinery, general cupboards, feature glass walls and radial shelving.
"We had chosen to use American walnut across the whole library because of its … straight grained appearance and its durability, being highly resistant to heartwood decay," said Carrie Das, design manager with AHK International. "It was also able to warm the environment and simultaneously provides a modern, classic and comfortable feeling."
