Seven Islands Land Company (Bangor, Maine) has purchased the MooseWood Flooring brand and wood flooring manufacturing assets of Kelly Lumber Sales Inc. (Ashland, Maine) for an undisclosed amount.
Seven Islands intends to retain MooseWood's current workforce of 16 employees, including key personnel Tim Kelly, mill manager, and Richard Poirier, sales and marketing manager. Seven Islands also intends to invest in operations to strengthen the flooring line's distribution network, the company said.
John McNulty, president of Seven Islands, said his company saw a strong brand in MooseWood, and that it liked the flooring line's 3,000-strong dealer network. "The company has an excellent distribution network, and we thought, with our resources, that we could grow MooseWood and add value to Seven Islands Land Company in the process," McNulty said, adding that he liked MooseWood's "green story," including its use of a kiln fueled with vegetable oil.
Supply for MooseWood, which was established in 2004, originates in forests managed by Seven Islands and owned by the Pingree family, one of the largest and oldest FSC-certified landowners in the U.S. MooseWood is milled by Maine Woods Company, which is also owned by Seven Islands.
Going forward, Seven Islands will continue offering MooseWood's FSC-certified line of prefinished and unfinished flooring in maple, birch and oak. Currently, MooseWood is available in more than 3,000 locations throughout the Northeast.
