Typically, felled urban trees are sent to a landfill; they're often knot-filled and not desired by traditional sawmills. However, they're highly desired by CitiLog, a Pittstown, N.J.-based urban sawmill, which recently opened a new branch in Newark, according to NJ.com.
Typically, felled urban trees are sent to a landfill; they're often knot-filled and not desired by traditional sawmills. However, they're highly desired by CitiLog, a Pittstown, N.J.-based urban sawmill, which recently opened a new branch in Newark, according to NJ.com.
The new sawmill rests on a 4-acre brownfield lot, and it specializes in turning discarded urban logs into marketable lumber products, like furniture, flooring pallets, and even railroad ties. "Green is the new sexy," the company's Site Operations Director John Sowell told NJ.com. "Every municipality or state has concerns about wood waste. Now they can bring their trees here and save on disposal costs."
