16 Companies Fined for Violating EPA Lead Rule

The Environmental Protection Agency announced 26 enforcement actions for companies violating its Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP). The actions include 13 administrative settlements and three filed administrative complaints; the agency assessed a total of $53,792 in civil penalties. In the three administrative complaints, the agency seeks civil penalties up to the statutory maximum of $37,500 per violation.

The violations dated from as early as May 2009 to as recent as July 2012, and locations were all in either the Midwest or the Eastern U.S. A full list of the companies and details about the violations can be found here.

The EPA's RRP rule took effect on April 22, 2010, and requires that contractors working on pre-1978 dwellings and child-occupied facilities be trained and certified to use lead-safe work practices. Although the rule has "Painting" in its name, it covers coated surfaces, including wood floor finish. More information about RRP from the EPA can be found here.
