As part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's 2014 and 2015 basketball rule changes, women's basketball courts must have a "lower defensive box" marked, and all courts must be "completely finished." The new markings will be required for the 2013-14 season.
The women's rules state: "To designate the lower defensive box (Rule 4-35), two tick marks shall be placed on each side of the lane. Each tick mark shall be a solid 2-inch wide line that is 12 inches long. Each tick mark shall be measured 3 feet from the outside edge of the lane line to the inside edge of the tick mark. The tick mark will begin on the baseline and run parallel to the lane line."
Both men's and women's rules stipulate that courts should be have a consistent finish on the entire floor, including logos, decals, the 3-foot area outside each sideline and 6-foot area outside each end line.
