Two of the three major winners in the National Association of Home Builders' annual Best in American Living Awards-"Home of the Year" and "Remodel of the Year"-feature innovative and re-purposed wood flooring.
An American Craftsman in the Mission Hills, Calif., community, designed by IS Architecture (La Jolla, Calif.) and built by Hill Construction Co. (San Diego) was named Home of the Year. Floors consist of the existing white oak that was original to the house and is then carried into new areas and the new second story. All floors were refinished and stained to provide an emphasis on period-correct details. The interiors are grand but warm and welcoming, a perfect place for the retired owners to host family and friends.

A Squaw Creek Ranch home in Doss, Texas, designed and remodeled by Laughlin Homes & Restoration Inc. (Fredericksburg, Texas), was selected as Remodel of the Year. It features wood floors that are a combination of reclaimed flooring from the home and salvaged long-leaf pine flooring. The materials were sanded and refinished in the true spirit of the project, with the objective of providing modern amenities and ample room for entertaining and overnight guests. Historic light fixtures, salvaged doors and lumber give the project a period feel, and a new standing-seam roof was applied in the traditional style.
