Leisure Education for Exceptional People (LEEP), a Minnesota-based nonprofit that affords individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in recreational sports and activities, was the recipient of a donated existing gym floor from a middle school near Armstrong, Iowa, and now they need help putting it to use.
The organization hopes to put the floor into a new building some day, but first they need to remove the floor and transport it 73 miles north to Mankato, Minn.
Cate DeBates, LEEP's program and volunteer coordinator, says the nonprofit cannot afford the cost of professional removal and transport, and she's asking for help.
"Without volunteers, the project will plummet and we will lose our future gym," she said in a statement. "We have nearly 300 Special Olympic athletes who we currently rent gym space for all over town, but there are not always spaces available. They need a consistent and accessible facility."
The nonprofit plans to bring volunteers to the site April 4-6. More information can be found online at MankatoLeep.org.
