For the Paddy-O: Porch Flooring Made From Rice Husks

An Indiana-based company is releasing a new porch flooring made mainly from a material new to the United States: rice husks.

Called Resysta, the product is imported from Germany and created using rice husks, an agricultural waste product that had no useful purpose, according to Residential Building. The product has been on the European market for more than a decade, but will be made available for the first time in the United States through Westech Building Products.

"We're excited for this growth opportunity," Renee Havrilla, general manager of Westech, told the magazine. "We are going to have the very first porch flooring product that looks like exotic or tropical hardwood, is 100 percent recyclable and is durable and long-lasting like foamed composites."

The company said the material does not swell, splinter or rot, and is UV-resistant, sandable, stainable and sealable.

The product will be released by Westech as TruGrain. There's no word yet from the company on whether the product may be slated for indoor use, as well.
