Rotting, uneven, rabbit-warren. Subfloor quality can turn what was supposed to be an easy install into a time-sucking nightmare. Schönox (Florence, Ala.) is holding a contest to recognize the worst subfloors in North American and the contractors who, despite the conditions, persevere and finish the job successfully.
"Too often the stability and condition of subfloors is overlooked in the flooring installation industry, resulting in failed installations," said Thomas Trissl, Schönox principal, in a statement. "With that thought in mind, Schönox has kicked off a subfloor competition for flooring companies where they can enter projects that began with damaged, unsound subfloors and were renovated using Schönox products."
Schönox products will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners. Judges are John McGrath, director of Install; Lew Migliore, president of LGM and Associates Technical Flooring Services; and Jim Walker, CEO of the International Certified Floorcovering Installers Association.
Entrants are asked to photograph the subfloor conditions before and after the renovation project. Submit the photos, along with project information, at hpsubfloors.com/worstsubfloor. Schönox products must be used during the renovation.
The contest runs through December 15. Winners will be announced at Surfaces in 2015.
