The figure represents an 8.6 percent increase over the April 2013 estimate of $878.4 billion.
The first four months in 2014 also showed higher construction spending than the first four months of 2013-$274.5 billion versus $252.1 billion, an 8.9 percent increase.
Private construction in April was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $686.5 billion, about the same as the March estimate, which was about $300 million higher. Residential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $378.5 billion in April, 0.1 percent above the revised March estimate of $378.3 billion. Nonresidential construction was 0.1 percent below the revised March estimate, $308.0 billion compared with $308.5 billion.
Public construction spending in April was at an annual rate of $267 billion, 0.8 percent higher than in March.
