What does an inch of standing water do to a basketball court? UCLA is about to find out.
After a major pipe burst on UCLA's campus last week Tuesday, nearly 10 million gallons of water spewed forth, flooding the school's basketball court, which had been part of a $132 million renovation just two years earlier.
Now, according to The Associated Press, "at least an inch of water covers the playing floor at Pauley Pavilion…"
"It's painful. It's painful," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block to the AP. "We just refurbished Pauley just a few years ago. And it's a beautiful structure. It's of course, a symbolic structure for this entire campus."
Administrative Vice Chancellor Jack Powazek added, "[L]uckily we're not in the middle of basketball season."
The floor was expected to be cleared of water overnight and damage assessed the next day.
