Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. and Dunkin' Brands, two of the largest doughnut brands in the world, implemented new policies with the goal of ending deforestation from their palm oil supply chains.
Although the brands have made commitments in the past to buy palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, accusatory campaigns by the Union of Concerned Scientists, Rainforest Action Network and Forest Heroes moved the brands to make policies that went further.
The activist organizations are now asking Tim Horton's, another major doughnut maker, to follow the two companies' lead.
The crop that produces palm oil has been called "the single most immediate threat to the greatest number of species," because it is highly profitable and productive.
The crop is said to be playing an "outsized role" in Malaysia and Indonesia deforestation.
