The United States Environmental Protection Agency settled with 75 companies between October 2014 and September 2015 that violated the Lead-based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule.
The RRP rule requires contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based coatings—lead paint, shellac or varnish—in child-occupied dwellings built before 1978 must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent contamination.
Companies who forego certification and operate in projects where lead is present risk thousands in fines from the EPA. See “Know Lead Paint Requirements or Risk Thousands” for more information.
Of the 75 companies fined by the EPA, six paid civil penalties in excess of $25,000 and ten companies paid penalties in excess of $10,000.
