Lowe’s Refunds 10 Percent of Installation Costs in Settlement with NY

Lowe’s has agreed to a settlement with the New York attorney general that will have the mega retailer refunding as much as 10 percent of the flooring installation fees paid by more than 10,000 customers, according to The Associated Press.

The company overcharged its customers with a “deceptive sales practice” that it agreed to halt in the state.

Lowe’s offered to install carpet, tile and wood and laminate floors at a square-foot rate based on materials bought, not actually installed, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman told the AP.

For example, Lowe’s advertised the price of installation at “$1.99/sf installed,” but did not disclose that this was based on the square footage of materials ordered, not the size of the project area, according to the attorney general website.

The company will refund its flooring installation customers up to 900,000.

Customers who paid for installation between 2009 and 2012 are eligible. The company changed its flooring agreement wording in 2012.

Lowe’s has 64 retail locations in the state.
