A 14-year-old Wisconsin girl received an unusual injury during a high school basketball game in Middleton—she was impaled by a hardwood floorboard during a play.
Video from News 3 shows the girl running under the basket, falling and sliding forward on the floor when she appears to lurch backward and come to a stop.
A piece of wood from the 15-year-old court splintered and pushed into the girl’s stomach. The piece was 3 to 4 inches long and a quarter to a half-inch deep, Perry Hibner, tournament organizer, told News 3.
The gym was cleared while emergency crews responded, released her from the splinter and placed her on a stretcher.
The girl spent the night at American Family Children’s Hospital, and there were no injuries to her internal organs, Hibner said.
“I just think sometimes strange things happen, and there's no explanation for the phenomena,” Hibner said.
