The 14-year-old girl who was impaled by a hardwood floorboard while participating in a basketball tournament in Middleton, Wis., in February has returned to playing, although she had at least one unwelcome surprise during her recovery.
A week after leaving the hospital, Ashlee Adler was still feeling discomfort in her abdomen. Upon examination, doctors found three pieces of the gym floor were still embedded inside her, one as long as 2 inches. The pieces were removed surgically without issue, and now Adler is back on the court.
"It feels great," she told NBC15 . "I like being with my team."
The incident took place on Feb. 14, and video of the injury went viral on the Internet. It showed Adler running under the basket, then falling and sliding forward on the floor before coming to an unnaturally quick stop due to a 3- or 4-inch-long piece of wood that splintered into her abdomen.
The family hasn't discussed legal action against the school, according to NBC15, but Jill Adler, her mother, hopes a lesson will be learned—that people will check their gym floors more thoroughly.
Meanwhile, Ashlee told NBC15 what she takes away from the bizarre accident: "[A] great story to tell your kids."
