Facing backlash, the government of Peru announced it has restored the independence of an agency established to help detect and curb the country’s rampant illegal logging trade, the Associated Press reports.
Peru had placed the independent agency under the jurisdiction of its ministry of environment, a violation of the U.S.-Peru trade agreement, which states that the agency must be an “independent and separate agency.”
In January 2019, U.S. Trade Representative issued a statement expressing grave concern about the move, and had since taken steps toward issuing sanctions against Peru for violating the trade agreement, according to the AP.
