The government of Brazil has begun cracking down on illegal logging operations in the Amazon, issuing 109 search and seizure warrants and freezing more than $12 million in timber company assets April 25, The Rio Times reports.
Six temporary arrest warrants were also issued, and two environmental agency officials in the country were arrested with charges related to illegal logging, according to the report.
Brazil contains the majority of the Amazon rainforest, and its deforestation increased 13.7% in 2018, the highest spike in a decade, the report states.
