The construction industry added 44,000 jobs between September and October, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.
The nonresidential construction sector, which has struggled to add jobs since the pandemic, recorded its second consecutive month of employment growth, adding 33,000 jobs during the month. The residential construction sector grew by 10,900 employees.
“It is encouraging to see continuing job growth in nonresidential construction, but the industry remains far behind the overall economy in recovering all of the job losses from the pandemic,” stated Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “Finding workers is a challenge after other sectors have been hiring for much longer.”
Overall, construction employment lagged by 150,000 compared with February 2020 employment numbers, the last month before the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with February 2020, the nonresidential sector was down by 239,000 jobs, while the residential sector was up by 89,000.
